Before you go

A few do’s and don’ts from Mustapha.

Do

  • Greet with “Salam” or “Bonjour” before starting a conversation.
  • Agree on a price before a taxi ride or an unmetered service.
  • Carry a printed or saved copy of your riad’s address.
  • Dress modestly, especially near mosques and in the Medina.
  • Try mint tea when it’s offered — it’s a sign of hospitality.
  • Keep small dirham notes for tips and quick purchases.

Don’t

  • Don’t photograph people, performers or shops without asking first.
  • Don’t accept unsolicited “guide” offers in the Medina — trust the person you booked with.
  • Don’t drink tap water if your stomach is sensitive.
  • Don’t rush into the first shop you’re pulled toward — take your time and compare.
  • Don’t expect to enter a mosque as a non-Muslim visitor — most stay closed to non-Muslims in Morocco.
  • Don’t feel pressured to buy after tea or a shop visit — a polite “no thank you” is enough.
